Palavras Super Confusas Em Inglês

Na língua inglesa é muito fácil confundir os significados das palavras, aqui estão algumas palavras que causam essa confusão nos alunos.

Deny / Refuse

deny – Falar que algo não é verdade ou negar você fez algo.

ex: The teenager denied stealing the DVDs from the store.

refuse – Não fazer algo ou dizer firmemente que você não irá fazer algo.

The employee was fired after he refused to do what the manager asked.

 

Staff / Employees

Ambas essas palavras se referem a pessoas que trabalham em uma empresa. Mas staff é para descrever os trabalhadores como um todo.  Employees descreve um conjunto de trabalhadores individuais.

The entire staff was happy about the extra day off.
All the employees were happy about the extra day off.

Quando você quer falar de um numero especifico, use employees ou staff members:

Thirty employees received raises.
Thirty staff members received raises.

 

Problem / Trouble

Problem é contavel e trouble normalmente não é:

I’m having a problem with the computer.
I’m having trouble with the computer.

The bad internet connection caused problems for the students.
The bad internet connection caused trouble for the students.

Trouble também pode ser usado como verbo:

These test results are troubling me. (ficar preocupado)

 

Relation / Relationship

Relationship pode descrever uma conexão entre duas pessoas (sendo romântica ou não):

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for three years. We have a great relationship.
He has a terrible relationship with his father.

Ambas as palavras relationship e relation podem descrever conexões entre duas coisas:

I’m studying the relationship between education levels and poverty.
There’s a close relation between smoking and lung disease.

 

Suppose / Supposed To

A palavra suppose significa algo como, imagino, presumo ou acredito:

He’s not answering his cell phone. I suppose he’s already gone to bed; after all, it’s midnight.

A expressão supposed to significa algo que você deveria fazer, mas não faz ou fez.

I was supposed to go to work today, but I’m sick so I stayed home.
We’re supposed to park our cars in the company garage, but most people just park on the street.

 

Switch / Change

A palavra change significa que algo ficou diferente. Já switch é mais especifico – significa parar de fazer/usar algo e começar a fazer/ usar outra.

I’m going to change a few things in my life this year.
Could you switch seats with me, so that I can sit next to my husband?
(the two people will exchange seats)
Her personality has changed a lot recently.
I wasn’t happy with my Nokia cell phone, so I switched to a Samsung.
(I stopped using the Nokia and started using the Samsung)
